Milky Fitzgerald

Pelvis fractures

Milky is a three year old female neutered Jack Russel cross who has been in the owners possession since birth and has had no previous significant medical history. Milky is a yard dog who spends the majority of her time free roaming. Unfortunately a visitor to the yard failed to see Milky and proceeded to park their car on top of her, crushing her pelvis. Milky sustained a severely fractured pelvis in multiple places, including through the acetabulum. However she was very fortunate to not have received further life threatening internal injuries. Surgery was performed to remove the head of her femur leaving a wound of approx. 15 cm down the front of her pelvis on the right side.  Unfortunately the skin staples did not hold, leaving the wound half open. Treatment consisted of daily phototherapy sessions to improve wound healing.
On day one of treatment the wound was stapled nicely closed for half of the wound. The other half had failed to hold leaving a deficit of approximately 1cm width. There appeared to be a healthy bed of fresh tissue and no sign of infection present. Milky was non weight baring on the leg.
On day  five the wound had decreased in size, with the edges showing signs of healthy fresh tissue.
On Day nine, the top half of the wound had completely closed. The bottom half had also significantly reduced in size, and showed a healthy rim of fresh skin tissue around the entire periphery of the wound .
On day eleven almost the full length of the wound had healed. There was just a small remaining circle  in the center of the wound that still needed to close.
On day fourteen the staples had been removed and the wound had healed completely. The top portion showed very little signs of scarring.
